ROPAX Jetty Project Approved on Dhamra River

The Indian Government approved Rs 50 crore to develop an all weather ROPAX in Odisha. The total cost of this project has been estimated at Rs 110 crore. The project aims to launch a roll-off or roll-on passenger jetty connecting Talchua in Kendrapara district and Kanali in Bhadrak district.


About the Project

The travel time from this project will be reduced from 6 hours to one hour. The jetty's contact points lie in the northern and southern banks of the Dhamra River.

The launch of the jetty service will increase commercial activities and commercial activities and will also increase the economic condition of the region.


Dhamra River

  • The Dhamra River is a joint stream formed at the confluence of the Baitarani and Brahmani rivers.

  • It falls in the Bay of Bengal.

  • It is located in Bhadrak district of Odisha.

  • The Dhamra port is in the north of its mouth.

  • Gahiramatha Sanctuary is located near the mouth of the Dhamra River.

  • In addition, the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary is located at the Dhamra mouth.

  • Wheeler Island is a DRDO launch center which is also located at the mouth of Dhamra.


Gahirmatha Sanctuary

Gahirmatha Sanctuary is the most important nesting site of Olive Ridley Sea Turtles. Gahirmatha Beach separates the nesting sites of the inner bivalve mangroves and turtles. Olive Ridley sea turtles are placed under the vulnerable category in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In addition, they are placed under Schedule 1 of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.


Inner lobe

It is mangrove wetland in Odisha. It is famous for crocodiles.
