Italy Launches The First Food Park In India

Italy recently launched the first "Mega Food Park" in India, which includes food processing facilities. It is the first Italian-Indian food park project undertaken in the country.


About the Project

  • The Project's name is "Mega Food Park".

  • The main objective of this Project is to develop interactions between agriculture and industry.

  • Also, the Project will focus on the research and development of efficient technologies in the region.

  • The scheme will be implemented in India by a Special Purpose Vehicle.

  • It will connect agricultural production and markets. It will help processors, farmers and retailers get together, maximize value addition, increase farmers' income, reduce wastage and create employment opportunities.


Mega Food Park Scheme in India

  • It is a scheme that the Ministry of Food Processing implements. The main objective of this scheme is to establish direct connectivity from farms to processing and consumer markets.

  • The plan aims to increase India's share in the global food trade by at least 3%.

  • Under this scheme, the Government of India provides 50 crore rupees to each food park.

  • This scheme aims to implement around 35 food processing units.

  • It has set a target of creating a turnover of Rs 400–500 crore and employment of at least 30,000 from each food park.

  • So far, 42 mega food parks have been sanctioned in six phases.

  • Each mega food park aims to add at least 25,000 farmers.
