Climate Offers a Glimmer of Hope for U.S.-China Cooperation
China and the United States, the world's two largest polluters, have agreed to work together to tackle climate change issues. They recently issued a joint statement that they would work together to maintain the Paris Agreement. This announcement precedes the Earth Day Leaders Summit.
Earth Day Leaders Summit
US President Joe Biden has invited 40 world leaders, including PM Modi and President Xi Jinping, to the World Leaders Summit on Climate. This summit will be held on World Earth Day, i.e. 22 April.
China's Nationally Set Goals
China had set NDC targets to achieve by 2020 and by 2030. They were as follows:
- Reducing the share of non-fossil fuels between 60% and 65% by 2030 compared to 2005.
- Increasing forest by 5 billion cubic meters by 2020 compared to 2005 level and 6 billion cubic meters by 2023.
- Wind and solar power generation capacity will be increased to 1,200 GW by 2030.
In December 2020, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the new 2030 climate target. They were as follows:
- By 2030, solar power generation capacity will be increased to 1,200 GW.
- By 2060, carbon neutrality has been targeted.
US Nationally Determined Contribution
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 26% to 28% by 2025 compared to 2005.
