Covid-19: India vaccination crosses 100 million doses

So far, more than 11 crore people have been given Covid-19 vaccine supplements in India. Significantly, before this, India became the fastest country to vaccinate 100 million people within just 85 days. Remarkably, the government has started vaccinating people above 45 years of age with effect from April 1, 2021.


How much does vaccination cost?

  • The vaccination campaign will run free in all 10,000 government hospitals.

  • But the beneficiary will have to pay to get their vaccination done at 20,000 private immunization centres. The Ministry of Health has not yet decided on the vaccine fee.


The first stage of Covid-19 vaccination

The first phase of the Covid-19 vaccination campaign was started on January 16, 2021. The campaign was launched at 3006 vaccination centres across the country. In the first phase, only vaccination of health workers and frontline workers was introduced. Under Phase I, approximately 1,26,71,163 people have been given the first dose of the vaccine so far. Of them, about 1.4 million people have received the second dose as well. People over 50 years of age have also been included in the vaccination campaign.


Second stage

  • Under the second phase of Covid-19 vaccination, people over 60 years of age are being vaccinated.

  • According to the guidelines, people over 45 years of age and people suffering from diseases are also being vaccinated.


COVAXIN

COVAXIN is a government-supported vaccine produced by Bharat Biotech. Its efficacy rate is 81%. More than 27,000 participants have participated in the phase three trials of the COVAXIN vaccine. COVAXIN is given in two doses. The time interval between doses is four weeks. COVAXIN was produced from the dead COVID-19 virus.


COVISHIELD

AstraZeneca produces the COVISHIELD vaccine. Locally, COVISHIELD is being produced by the Serum Institute of India. It was created from a weaker version of a common cold virus called chimpanzee's adenovirus. The virus has been modified to look like the COVID-19 virus. It is applied in two doses.
