NSO Releases 'Women and Men in India, 2020' Report
The National Statistical Office (NSO), working under the Ministry of Program and Statistics Implementation, recently released the report ‘Women and Men in India, 2020’. This report consolidates important socio-economic indicators that illustrate the sex-ratio situation in the country. This report is published annually by MoSPI.
Population Data
- The estimated population of India in 2021 is 130 million.
- The sex ratio has increased from 933 in 2001 to 943 in 2011.
- Highest increase in sex ratio recorded by Delhi, followed by Chandigarh & Arunachal Pradesh.
- On the other hand, the sex ratio declined most in Daman and Diu.
Health Data
- The age specific fertility rate was 4 for women aged 25–29 years.
- Infant mortality rate decreased from 39 to 32 from 2014 to 2018.
- Maternal mortality rate decreased from 212 in 2007–09 to 113 in 2016–18.
- Rural India had a total fertility rate of 3 in 2018. It was 1.7 in urban areas in 2018.
- The teen fertility rate decreased from 13 in 2017 to 2 in 2018.
- According to the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5), the states of Goa, Kerala, Lakshadweep saw almost 100% institutional deliveries.
- The incidence of HIV per 1000 people decreased from 07 in 2017 to 0.05 in 2019.
Education
- India's literacy rate has increased from 73 in 2011 to 7 in 2017.
- The gender gap in literacy rate was highest in Rajasthan, Bihar, UP.
- Only 3% of women 15 years of age completed their graduation. On the other hand, 12.8% of men of the same age graduated.
- 8% of female students were studying up to class X.
Economy participation
- According to the Periodic Labor Force Survey, 2018-19, the ratio of the labor population in rural areas was 1 for men and 19 for women. In urban areas, it was 52.7 for men and 14.5 for women.
- The average wage per hour earned by the female population at the age of 15 was the highest in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Rs 147 per hour), followed by Lakshadweep and Nagaland. The lowest was in the states / union territories of Daman and Diu, Odisha.
- The average salary earned by the male population in the age group above 15 years was the highest (Rs 121 per hour) in Lakshadweep.
Participation in Decision Making
- The representation of women in the Union Council of Ministers is 26% in 2020.
- In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, there were 437.8 million women voters.
- The highest participation of women in Panchayati Raj institutions was seen in the states of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh.
