Over 4 crore rural households provided tap water supply under Jal Jeevan Mission

Jal Jeevan Mission has provided more than four crore rural homes with a tap water supply. PM Mr Narendra Modi announced the mission on August 15, 2019, to deliver tap water to every household in rural areas by 2024.




Main point


Now, over 7 crore or more than one-third of rural households are getting portable tap water. Goa has become the first state to provide 100 % tap water supply, followed by Telangana and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. With the Union Territories' and States untiring efforts, the Jal Jeevan Mission has helped provide assured tap water supply to families residing in more than 56 districts and 86,000 villages.




Jal Jeevan Mission


This mission was launched on August 15, 2019. It is envisaged to provide adequate and safe drinking water through rural household tap connections. It will try to give a tap water connection to all rural households in India by 2024. This program implements source sustainability measures such as recharge and reuses through grey water management, rainwater harvesting and water conservation as essential elements. 




Mission objectives



The Water Life Mission was launched with the following objectives:

  • Providing FHTC or Functional Household Tap Connection to every rural household.

  • To prioritise the provision of FHTC in quality affected areas, drought-affected villages and desert areas etc.

  • To provide functional tap connection in Anganwadi centres, schools, health centres, gram panchayat buildings, welfare centres and community buildings.

  • Monitoring the functionality of tap water connections.
